I want to send a story to EQMM, but I've noticed that the short stories you publish are quite short and my story is almost 4,000 words. Do you publish stories that long?
And also, I'm fluent in both Spanish and English, but my written stories are in Spanish. Could I send an unpublished story translated by me?

I don't think 4,000 words is very long. The submission guidelines say that 2500 to 12,000 are acceptable, with some as short as 250. Longer submissions of up to 20,000 are considered for a couple of slots per year, but they are generally for more established writers.

The one I submitted was a little over 3,000.

Personally, I think 4,000 words is the perfect length for a short story. . . .

One I did came it at about 5,000 and everyone that read it said that it felt rushed. I was told on here, that that's usually an indication that the story is too long, but I had been given very specific places where it could be lengthened. In it's current version, it's just under 17,000 and people seem to be happy with the pace.

I've also got one at 12,000 that feels rushed.

My normal count for a short is 3000 to 7500, and they tend toward the upper range of that. I do have a couple that between 500 and 1000 though.

Melvin, if you wrote a story in Spanish and then converted it (as yet unpublished) to English, I can't imagine the magazine rejecting a well-written story.

Put a different way, it will be the quality of the story that counts as long as everything else is legally kosher.

If you already purged superfluous modifiers and unnecessary verbiage, then it's a 9000 word story.

I've got one I'd like to submit to EQMM, but the word count is 925. I know that's above the 250 absolute lower limit, but I'm really curious as to the acceptance odds of one that short. It would also be a Dept of First Stories if that makes a difference.

Can't say I have seen many stories that short in EQMM, but I guess your odds depend on how good your story is. Best of luck, anyway!
